Students who set their own learning goals are more able to follow through with the goal and may work harder to accomplish their goals. Students who take a more active role in goal setting are more likely to have increased student motivation, self-regulation, self-efficacy and achievement in their learning. As students set their own goals, they take personal responsibility and ownership of their learning goals. Setting goals can be especially important for students with low achievement motivation. Studies have shown that students who set goals increased their motivation, even if a students past performance exhibited low achievement.
