Students who develop understanding of content at a deeper knowledge level are more able to transfer their knowledge in different ways. Deeper learning requires learners to draw information from knowledge that they have acquired and then provides opportunities for students to do something meaningful with their knowledge. Deeper learning requires a broad range of conscious learning behaviors from students. Students must accept responsibility for expending time and energy necessary to think about a task, select the proper learning strategies and then judge how well those strategies are working. When students encounter difficulty or setbacks, deeper learning requires that students diagnose the type of difficulty they are facing, select appropriate strategies to resolve the difficulty, and then continue forward in their learning goal. Deeper learning expects students to be able to meet goals and engage in the self-reflection necessary to continue learning throughout their lives (Deeper Learning Competencies, 2013).
